Marjolijn van den Assem

Marjolijn van den Assem (Rotterdam, 11 February 1947) is a Dutch visual artist. She lives and works in Rotterdam.

Marjolijn

Van den Assem's work can be read as travel reports via seismographic drawings. She is not concerned with a realistic representation of what the eye sees, but she lets her hand depict the line of thought - the way of thinking. Her imaginary journeys often have their origins in the letters of Friedrich Nietzsche. Her work has been included in many Dutch museums, including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, and in corporate and private collections.

According to Elsevier (6 May 2006, no. 18), in the ranking of "The best 100 Dutch artists" Marjolijn van den Assem was in 70th place. In 2012 she received the 'Brilliant artist of the year' oeuvre prize (Stichting kunstweek). Van den Assem received the Hendrik Chabot Prize for her work in 2019.
